When you transfer from one post-secondary institution (the sending institution) to another (the receiving institution), you may be able to take some of your credits with you. The credits which are granted by the receiving institution for work done at the sending institution are called transfer credits. Transfer credit is sometimes also called advanced standing.
The University of Saskatchewan accepts, for transfer of credit, courses from accredited institutions in Canada and elsewhere. In most cases, credit is awarded on a course-by-course basis for courses equivalent to those taught at the University of Saskatchewan.
The purpose of evaluating transfer credit is to give students and applicants fair and reasonable credit for academic work which has been undertaken at another institution, and to reduce the likelihood of a student repeating academic work in which he or she has already demonstrated competence.
Authority for evaluation of transfer credit rests with the Admissions Office, and is based on published transfer credit policy and an examination of published accreditation guides, transfer credit guides, calendar course descriptions, detailed course outlines, precedent, and the advice of colleges and departments.
When you apply for admission to the University of Saskatchewan, you are asked to provide details of your previous and current education, including all secondary and post-secondary studies. You also sign a declaration that you have not withheld any information. Since your studies at another institution may have a bearing on your admissibility to the University of Saskatchewan, it is considered an academic offence to omit any of this information when you complete an application for admission.
Applicants who have attempted/completed 18 credit units of transferable courses will be considered for admission on the basis of their post-secondary grades.
If you are a new applicant, your transfer credits are evaluated after we receive the complete transcript of your academic record from the sending institution. It is your responsibility to ensure that an official and complete transcript of your studies at any other post-secondary institution at which you have studied is sent directly from the institution to our Admissions Office. The cost of the evaluation is included in your application fee.
If you are already a student at the University of Saskatchewan and plan to take courses at another post-secondary institution, you should ask your College to provide you with a Letter of Permission. A Letter of Permission is a letter issued by your College to another post-secondary institution which confirms that you are a student in good standing at this university, and that you have the College’s permission to enrol in university-level courses at the receiving institution for credit back to the University of Saskatchewan. This letter will list the courses in which you may enrol as a visiting student at the receiving institution. Your copy of the letter is your assurance that these courses are applicable to your program at the University of Saskatchewan.
After you have completed the course at the other institution, arrange for an official transcript to be sent to our Admissions Office, where it will be automatically matched to your Letter of Permission and evaluated for transfer credit.
If you are a Visiting Student at the University of Saskatchewan, you should arrange for an official University of Saskatchewan transcript to be sent to your home institution upon completion of your classes so that your home institution may award transfer credit.
If you are a former student of the University, and are returning to study at the University of Saskatchewan, you must arrange to have official and complete transcripts from any other post-secondary institution at which you have subsequently studied sent directly to our Admissions Office. There is no charge for the evaluation.
If you are considering applying to the University of Saskatchewan or have never been a student here, there is an evaluation charge of $90CDN. This charge will be deducted from your application fee if you apply for admission in the next academic session. Payment can be made in person or sent to Admissions. Indicate that you are paying for transfer credit evaluation only.
To obtain a formal evaluation, you must arrange to have official and complete transcripts forwarded directly from the sending institution to our Admissions Office (along with a word for word translation, if these are in a language other than English or French).
