Anatomy & Cell Biology
Explore the evolution and embryonic development of the human body. Study the process from gene to organism, fertilized egg to death. Share your interest in the life sciences with others while participating in departmental research. These opportunities and more are available to you when you choose to major in Anatomy & Cell Biology at the University of Saskatchewan.
What is Anatomy & Cell Biology?
Students in Anatomy & Cell Biology study the structure, function and development of the organism at the cell, tissue and organ levels. As well, students discover and explore the life sciences and the human being through the study of the human body. Anatomy & Cell Biology programs offer a range of perspectives to students with courses in cell biology, organic chemistry, genetics, microbiology and physiology.
Students in Anatomy & Cell Biology programs gain essential experience and knowledge through participating in departmental research in cell and molecular biology, neurobiology and developmental biology.
A Stepping Stone...
The Department offers a B.Sc. in both Anatomy & Cell Biology and Cell Biology & Biotechnology.
The Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology programs are designed so that students are prepared to undertake studies in professional school programs in various health sciences: Medicine, Dentistry, Physical Therapy, Chiropractic, Veterinary Medicine and Optometry. Many of the Department's students choose these career paths. Students who obtain an Honours degree in Anatomy or in Cell Biology & Biotechnology have an excellent basis for a career in the biotechnology industry and health industries. Graduates with doctoral degrees in Anatomy have opportunities for academic careers in universities and research institutions.
Career Opportunities
There are many opportunities available to graduates of Anatomy & Cell Biology programs:
Research — technical positions in biomedical research laboratories in universities, government research institutes and industrial biotechnology companies.
Teaching — high schools, universities, colleges, and applied arts & science institutions. (Additional study in the College of Education is required to obtain a high school teacher’s certificate. Teaching positions at the college- and university-level require advanced training at the M.Sc. or Ph.D. level).
Practice — students who obtain an Honours degree in Anatomy or in Cell Biology & Biotechnology also have an excellent basis for a career in the biotechnology industry, as well as the health industry.
The U of S Advantage
There are numerous career opportunities for Anatomy & Cell Biology graduates with the rapid growth of the biotechnology industry. The University of Saskatchewan’s program is designed to provide students with a multidisciplinary perspective on the progressive field of biotechnology.
Choose Your Program!
The Anatomy & Cell Biology program is divided into four areas of specialization:
- Cell Biology
- Developmental Biology
- Neurobiology
- Human Anatomy
A Major in Anatomy & Cell Biology
Students majoring in Anatomy & Cell Biology can choose from one of the following degrees:
- B.Sc. Three-year
- B.Sc. Four-year
- B.Sc. Honours
The three-year degree program provides students with a general background in Anatomy & Cell Biology. Additional career options are available to students who wish to complete a more comprehensive study of Anatomy & Cell Biology in the four-year degree program or the Honours programs. Students pursuing an Honours degree will specialize in one area and conduct a research project, in preparation for graduate studies.
Outstanding Students & Faculty
The Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology continues to have many illustrious undergraduates who have been awarded various distinctions, including the Rhodes Scholarship. In addition, many of our graduate students have been awarded scholarships and/or awards for their research.
Getting Involved!
Join the Anatomy and Cell Biology Student Society (ACBSS), which is operated by an enthusiastic group of students in our Anatomy & Cell Biology B.Sc. programs. The Society sponsors a variety of social events throughout the academic year, provides an opportunity for new students to seek advice from their upper-year peers, and serves as a liaison with the Department's faculty. The Anatomical Student Society is always eager to welcome new members, so be sure to get involved!
Laboratory & Research Facilities
The Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology contains many modern, well-equipped laboratories for research and training in the areas of cellular and molecular biology, tissue culture and digital anatomical imaging.
