Why study Aboriginal Public Administration?
Studying Aboriginal Public Administration will help you understand the rights and responsibilities of Aboriginal governments. APA courses are designed to provide theoretical and practical training regarding Aboriginal communities and their governments within the current context of reclaiming and reasserting Aboriginal self-governance. APA courses place a special emphasis on policy analysis in terms of the role that policies can play in developing strong and healthy Aboriginal communities and governments.
Students enrolled in the program acquire knowledge through books and discussions in the classroom. They attend special lectures and events both on and off campus that provide them with important insights into various aspects of public administration in various aboriginal communities. Students may also be able to enroll in an internship class that gives them firsthand exposure to public administration in Aboriginal communities.
What is Aboriginal Public Administration?
The general purpose of the Aboriginal Public Administration Program is to prepare Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students for careers in the governmental and non-governmental (i.e. for –profit and not –for-profit) spheres of the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal sectors.
The program is designed to help students understand the unique governance, administrative, management and policy issues in Aboriginal communities, and also the impact of the operation of current public institutions and processes on Aboriginal people. It is also designed to help them understand the dynamic interactions of Aboriginal and now Aboriginal governments and communities.
This is accomplished by exposing students to courses that examine a range of important topics such as: public administration, and policy; Native studies; Indigenous knowledge; management, and policy; national, provincial and local governance.
A Major in Aboriginal Public Administration...
Students interested in the Aboriginal Public Administration Program may pursue the undergraduate degree program. The four-year undergraduate B.A. or Honours degree program is open to students who do not have an undergraduate degree. This program consists of a minimum of 120 credit units.
A Stepping Stone...
The Aboriginal Public Administration Programs is an important stepping stone both for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students who wish to assume important positions of governance leadership within the management and administration of Aboriginal communities, or wish to pursue graduate studies in disciplines such as Public Administration, Public Policy, Business Administration or Law.
Career Opportunities....
The Aboriginal Public Administration Program prepares students for careers both within and outside the Aboriginal sector.
Within the Aboriginal sector the program prepares students for careers with various types of governmental and non-governmental Aboriginal agencies and enterprises at the national, regional and local levels. This includes both First Nations and Métis agencies and enterprises.
Outside the Aboriginal sector the program prepares students for careers with an array of governmental and non-governmental agencies or enterprises. This includes: agencies and enterprises of the federal, provincial or local governments; agencies of local authorities such as health boards, education boards, and economic development; agencies in the not for-profit sector; and agencies in the for-profit sector.

The University of Saskatchewan is strategically located so as to provide students with excellent opportunities to access governmental and non-governmental officials both in the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal sectors who can provide them with important insights on various matters related to their research and careers. Many such officials work either in Saskatoon or within driving distance from the city.
The Aboriginal Public Administration Program provides opportunities for practical experience through internships both inside and outside the Aboriginal sector. Internships are competitive and students are chosen based on established criteria. Students should inquire about such internships as soon as they enter the program.

The Aboriginal Public Administration program allows students to take courses that examine a range of topics such as Aboriginal government, policies, management and administration; Canadian and comparative government, policies, and management; economics; financial and human resources management; business-government relations; and administrative law.

As a student in Aboriginal Public Administration, you will find many opportunities to get involved in student activities at the University of Saskatchewan. Examples include the Aboriginal Public Administration Students’ Society (APASS) and the Indigenous Students’ Council (ISC).
