Modern Languages
Students choosing the Modern Languages Degree will be combining two (or more) languages in conjunction with courses in linguistics and comparative literature. This allows students to gain a broader understanding of different cultures, the literature of their chosen area and the historical evolution of languages through linguistics. The focus primarily revolves around language learning, however some students also discover an entirely new interest in literature or linguistics.
A Stepping Stone
Taking modern languages at the University of Saskatchewan will enable you to become acquainted with other cultures and provide you with new perspectives. Most importantly, it will prepare you for a professional life in an international setting, where an intercultural competence is becoming increasingly important and sought-after by employers.
Career Opportunities
A degree in modern languages—combined with learning other foreign languages—provides you with a diverse array of career opportunities:
- teachers
- interpreters
- translators
- journalists
- communicators
- government institution workers
- librarians
In any job where multiculturalism is valued or an important aspect of the daily demands, being able to communicate effectively in more than one language can give you a competitive edge over other candidates. This is especially relevant when applying for jobs with companies that have international operations or markets.
The U of S Advantage
Our Modern Languages Program offers a solid foundation of courses. We provide rewarding learning opportunities, and as a smaller program, offer students a high degree of personal contact with dedicated faculty.
In addition, the study and work abroad opportunities available to U of S modern languages students match and even surpass those of larger language departments at other institutions. All this makes ours a materially-enhanced language program.
