Classical & Near Eastern Archaeology is a field of study for students with interests in both archaeology and the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean and the Near East. This program provides students with a focused course of study in the art, archaeology, culture and languages of ancient Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Israeli, Greek and Roman civilizations.
On a broader scale, students also investigate the comprehensive theories and methodologies of archaeology and anthropology. Students have the opportunity to make their own contributions to this field of study through excavations and independent research projects.
A degree in Classical & Near Eastern Archaeology provides students with the academic background for further studies in areas such as archaeology, ancient history and museology. Many graduates have gone on to take second degrees in law, linguistics, journalism, and education. Graduates have excellent prospects as Master’s students at the U of S and other top universities across North America and abroad. Master’s graduates may choose to pursue Ph.D. or other post-graduate opportunities.
There are a wide variety of opportunities open to graduates of the Classical & Near Eastern Archaeology program. Graduates may pursue professional careers in archaeology, ancient history, museum interpretation & administration or archival work. There are also many opportunities available in the areas of cultural resource management, heritage preservation, education, government, journalism and tourism. Classical & Near Eastern Archaeology graduates have highly developed research, communication and critical thinking skills which provide a solid foundation to pursue further academic, professional or field research opportunities.
The flexibility of this program gives students the freedom to customize a degree suited to their particular interests. Degree programs may be combined in consultation with the departments concerned.
