Prairie Studies

These opportunities and more await students who choose to major in Prairie Studies at the University of Saskatchewan.
What is Prairie Studies?
Prairie Studies deals with the complex connections between the society, culture, politics, economics, landscape and environment of the Prairies. This unique program involves inter-institutional collaboration with the University of Regina and the First Nations University of Canada. The Prairie Studies program builds on the substantial scholarly strengths and depth of understandings available at the partner institutions due to their location in the northern Great Plains. Students have the opportunity to pursue their degree at any or all of the three sites through on-site, online and/or distance learning.
A Stepping Stone…
Graduates from the Prairie Studies program will be able to go on to graduate studies in the area of Plains Studies, Geography, History, Political Studies, Indigenous Studies, Languages or Public Policy. Graduates may also use the degree as a stepping stone to other programs, such as Law. Unique opportunities also await students at the Canadian Plains Research Centre located in Regina.
Career Opportunities
Students will be well prepared for a wide variety of career opportunities in provincial and federal government organizations, non-governmental organizations, regional economic development agencies, rural municipalities, and rural, northern and Aboriginal corporations.
A Major in Prairie Studies
Students majoring in Prairie Studies can choose from one of the following degrees:
- B.A. Four-Year
- B.A. Honours
Students will take advantage of two capstone courses in Prairie Studies and can choose from a selection of Cree, German, Russian, Ukrainian, or French language courses. Other courses taken in Prairie Studies involve the following topics:
- Prairie Geography
- Prairie History
- Indigenous Studies
- Literature & Art
- Prairie Society & Politics
- Indigenous Language
