“I enjoy the Transition Program because of the smaller class sizes and getting to spend more time with your instructor. ”—Jareme Koska, Hometown: Redcliff AB
The Transition Program provides a supportive and close-knit learning environment that helps students make the jump from high school to university.
This popular initiative has been designed specifically for students whose high school grades fall below the College of Arts & Science’s admission requirements. With small classes – a maximum of 25 students – innovative instructors and numerous other support and advising services, the Transition Program equips its students with the tools they need to be successful in the College of Arts & Science.Students in the Transition Program can take 18 credit units (three full-year or six half-year classes) through the College of Arts & Science at the Saskatoon Public School Division Royal West Campus in Saskatoon. Here, there are also opportunities to complete Grade 12 or upgrade high school marks. After successfully completing 18 credit units, students can remain in the College of Arts & Science and begin studies on the U of S main campus, or they can apply to the college of their choice as a Transfer Student.
No matter what your future goals entail, the Arts & Science Transition Program is here to help you get there. Many of our students have gone on to become successful university students and now enjoy a renewed self-confidence – accomplishments that we take pride in and help make possible through unparalleled student support and guidance.
More than 70% of students have transferred to the U of S main campus since the Transition Program was established in 2004, leaving no doubt that the Program truly is a stepping stone to success!
“I was a struggling student in high school, and the Arts & Science Transition Program gave me the support I needed to become a successful university student.”—Reanne Risdale, Hometown: Saskatoon SK
A unique and popular program, the Transition Program believes that all students—regardless of their academic performance in high school—can be successful at the U of S, given the necessary tools.
The Transition Program operates out of the Saskatoon Public School Division Royal West Campus at 441 Witney Avenue North, a facility shared between the University of Saskatchewan and Saskatoon Public School Division. In this small and supportive environment, it is easy to make new friends and take part in a variety of recreational and social events organized both on and off site. The helpful instructors and academic advisors help ensure that students grow both personally and academically, equipping them for a successful future at the University of Saskatchewan and beyond.
As University of Saskatchewan students, those in the Transition Program have access to all U of S services and facilities, such as: libraries, computer labs, math and writing help, Aboriginal student services, disability services, student employment resources, and health and counselling services.
Students in the Transition Program also benefit from a variety of on-site support services at Royal West Campus, such as the Writing Centre, career advising services, a university life-skills course and comfortable study areas.
“I have enjoyed the small class sizes, the course choices, the easy access to all U of S privileges and the close relationship with guidance counsellors.”—Kaley Brost, Hometown: Wetaskiwin AB
Students in the Transition Program organize a variety of events throughout the year, such as pizza/movie nights, Christmas potluck dinners, Halloween parties, yoga classes, billiards and a variety of other sports.
Due to the program’s small size, it is easy to make new friends through the numerous activities taking place both on and off campus. It is for these reasons and many others that the Transition Program truly does help ease the move from high school to university.
The Transition Program is tailored towards students who do not meet the regular admission requirements established by the College of Arts & Science.
Students wishing to be considered for the Transition Program must submit an Application for Admission with Arts & Science as their “Planned Course of Study.” Express interest in the Arts & Science Transition Program by selecting “Yes” as prompted. A complete application form, must be submitted before the stated application deadline, and official high school transcripts and application fee must be submitted before the stated document deadline. Those applicants who qualify for the College of Arts & Science Transition Program will be contacted and offered an opportunity to join the program.
